The Psychobiography Reading Group of the Psychohistory Forum

The Psychobiography Reading Group is devoted to the rigorous study of individual lives through a psychodynamic and psychohistorical lens. Our purpose is to examine how character develops over time within its historical, cultural, and relational context — and how inner life and historical circumstance shape one another across the lifespan.

Established in 2023 by the Psychobiography Research and Publication Group of the Psychohistory Forum, the virtual Reading Group meets in alternate months (with a summer break) for structured, text-based discussion of selected works.

Our methodological emphasis is explicitly bottom-up. We begin with historical material: primary and secondary sources, childhood and formative experiences, family structure, early attachments, autobiographical accounts, and the cultural and political environments in which a life unfolded. From there, we examine the development of character over time — patterns of adaptation, relational style, defensive organization, and the individual’s evolving search for meaning or vocation.

While the group draws substantially on psychodynamic thought, we also welcome other psychologically informed approaches that remain historically grounded and evidence-based. Interpretation grows from documented life history rather than from imposed theoretical templates.

Readings are intentionally limited (generally under 100 pages per meeting) to permit close engagement and substantive exchange.

This is a working discussion group. Participants are expected to complete the assigned readings in advance. To preserve the integrity of dialogue, active participation is reserved for those prepared for the session.

Membership in the Psychohistory Forum is not required, though it is encouraged.

RSVP is required for each meeting to receive Zoom access. A reminder with the link is sent the day before the meeting.
